While Che Guevara was shot in Bolivia,

Siegfried Sassoon died in his bed,

the US bombed Hanoi,

Biafra declared independence,

Israel gained the Golan Heights,

a heart was transplanted in Cape Town,

the Beatles sang ‘Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band’,

the Supremes ‘Love is here and now you’re gone’,

the Cartwrights roamed the Ponderosa,

the Cookie Monster ‘Sesame Street’,

‘The Prisoner’ confounded,

‘Jackanory’ revolved,

‘The Naked Ape’ sold,

‘Rosemary’s Baby’ appalled,

the Abortion Act was passed,

Spurs won the Cup,

the National Front was formed,

the pound was devalued,

there was you.

I remember so much of this vividly. The Naked Ape. Love it or hate it? Rosemary’s Baby, Sgt. Pepper, heart transplants, unforgettable. I watched The Prisoner, thinking I got it and hoping I did, sensing I better. What a great time to be born!

This snapshot of the year took me back to that awkward adolescence of identity and longing. A politically naive young person, uncertain in a suburban world. Of a geography field trip where someone had brought one of those new cassette recorders, playing Sgt. Peppers, over lush grass in the Yorkshire Dales. Destiny, as yet, unknown.
